7:46 pm - About time
|
Well done Kevin and all of those people who have worked to bring about the national apology to indigenous Australians today. Finally some constructive rhetoric after years of useless rhetoric.
Shelley Reys's piece summed it up best for me. Saying sorry and exhibiting good manners is a "hallmark of a good relationship". No more of this 'I didn't do anything to them so why should I apologise' bullshit. Don't get me started on Brendan Nelson and his attempt at sabotaging the day.... and Wilson Tuckey, well he's just not worth the energy it would take to rant about him.
But regardless, I'm starting to feel better about being an Australian now... the change of government has brought a subtle change in mood that I welcome. I want this country to be mature and fair, while remembering that we are not perfect and keeping arrogance in check. I've really had enough of the rampent nationalism of the past decade.

10:10 pm - Update
|
Well... Australia Day was a fizzer... but that's okay. I like Australia Day, but it does bother me that it's a celebration of white settlement. (Hello Sydney still does the tall ship re-enactment). Also, seeing all of the little bogans running around with the flags on with their hyper-normalised ideals of what it means to be Australian pisses me off.
What also pisses me off is the house only two blocks away what had a party so loud that I had to shut all my windows and turn the telly to full to hear it over the hottest 100. I know I'm getting old but they are just rude little fucking shits to play it that loud, even in the middle of the day. And the party was full of the little bogans I mentioned before.
But then I went to Kate's hen's night that night which was fun.

8:32 pm - Arms and sadness
|
I've been watching the Australian Open (tennis) and for the first time I've noticed the difference in the size players' preferred and non preferred arms. I don't know why I've never noticed it before, but now that I have, it bothers me. Oh well... don't know what I really expected anyway.
Also... Heath Ledger...
I don't usually feel to emotional or attached when celebrities die (eg Steve Irwin, Peter Brock) apart from the normal sadness for their families. But I find myself being particularly sad at Heath's death. I genreally liked his choice of movies and what he did as a professional. I feel sad because I think we are all going to be deprived of some great work that could have been.

Well I've finally joined everyone else in the known universe and have bought an iPod. My old Creative Zen was on it's last legs - the back and forward and scroll buttons wouldn't work anymore so in order to skip a song I had to queue all track each time.
But I am happy with my purchase so far. I got a radio remote with it was well since I usually listen to music while walking around and shopping so I can just leave it in my bag. But syncing through iTunes is a pain in the arse.
Other news... my diet is going okay. I've lost a bit over 2 kg (although when weighing myself yesterday everything was back on... I'm just going to ignore it and hope it was an anomaly... It was really hot yesterday and I was drinking crap loads of water).

9:52 pm - Entertaining nil all draw
|
... and no I'm not being sarcastic. I went to see the Roar play Sydney FC on the weekend and it was a pretty good game. It was a league record crowd for the season so the atmosphere was fantastic - thanks mostly to the Orange Army behind goal.
The Roar dominated the game and probably deserved to win. But there were only a few real chances.
But we're on top of the ladder with one round to go - thanks to our goal difference. There are four teams on the same points going into the final round so I will have to find a pub somewhere to see next week's game against Adelaide - if we win it's more than likely we'll get the premiership (unless one of the other tied teams flogs someone).
But I will get to go to the first semis the Roar have ever been involved in so that will be great - here's hoping for an even bigger crowd for that one.

8:22 am - Finally - let's get this year started!
|
I'm so glad the silly season is finally over. I can't help it, but I really am a bit of a Christmas Grinch.
I'm happy now because I can get back into routine.
So... here I am at work. Bah. It's 8:30 and I'm still the only person on the entire floor. Maybe I should hook up some music and blast the place today? I'm sad becasue I have to take down my 2007 noble cats calendar. I shall have to go on a hunt to find an equally crap calendar for 2008.
NYE was pretty good. Just spent it at a club with some friends which was cool. Best part was running into some other friends who had a designated driver so I was able to bum a lift home instead of fighting the crowds for taxis in the rain.
Speaking of rain, I know that being in a drought and all I shouldn't wish it away but it's so annoying. It's been raining for nearly a week straight and I'm over it! Go rain over the farms and dams that need it, not on inner city Brisbane.
I've also started a diet. I've always known that I do a decent amount of exercise but my downfall is that I eat like complete crap... and drink too much. So I've started the Total Wellbeing Diet developed by the CSIRO. It is just common sense really, but it's structured nicely. I'm not going to follow their meal plans, but just the general structure of portions of protein, cereal, veges, etc. I don't think I'll be able to cut down my alcohol intake as much as I'm supposed to (only allowed 2 glasses of wine per week argh!!!) but I'm going to at least try and cut down a bit. It's easier when you start from a high base. Anyway, my goal is to lose 10kg so here goes.
I hope everyone had a good Christmas break and best wishes to you all for 2008.

9:33 pm - The gateway to the Whitsundays
|
Just got back this morning from visiting Sean and Ursh in Mackay. Had a fantastic time!
Got in kate on Thursday night and was whisked away to Thai for dinner which is always yummy. On Friday we went out for a visit to one of the beaches nearby where there was a weird dog with a stick. Then drove about 40 minutes for a Pinnacle Pie - I had a steak pie with mushy peas AND chips and salad. This was apparently odd if you took the bar guy's reaction as a guide. Later that afternoon Micky turned up, Sean's cousin from Sydney and we started drinking and swimming. Sean's mum and dad were also up so we joined them along with Jamie (Sean's brother) and his girlfried Amy for HUGE steaks at Beefy's. We were very drunk. I was so drunk I was singing American Pie... and that's never a good kind of drunk.
Sean and Micky invented Smolo on Saturday - oh and we voted. Then we had the Smolo world championships that night when everyone came over for a bbq. Singles Smolo was a little more organised rule wise. Team Smolo was pretty much just water polo where fouling was allowed.
I spent a good part of that night checking the election coverage like a geek.
After Smolo we had a good sing along with the guitars. I've got a brand new pair of rollerskates...
Sunday we had brunch, sat with Micky at the airport, checked out Lambert's Beach lookout, then flew a kite in the afternoon. Haven't done that since I was a kid.
All in all it was a good relaxing time!

5:45 pm - A whole new world
|
I haven't been able to stop smiling since Saturday. Just the knowledge that John Howard and his bunch of right wing conservative arseholes have finally been booted is one of the best feelings I've had in a while. I always knew I was fairly interested in politics, but I never thought that I would feel so happy at a result like this. It must have been the resounding thumping the Liberal/National coalition was given by the Kevin 07 crew that makes it so good.
Oh and Maxine! Maxine how I love you so. I hope you get a ministry position for beating Howard in his own seat so we are completely free from his insidious influence for good.
And the the "Julia" chant that went up around the tally room whenever Julia "first female deputy PM" Gillard was on screen was classic.
But here's a quote that describes more articulately how I feel:
ON SATURDAY night, when it was clear the Howard government had been defeated, many Labor supporters around me said: "You must be so happy." But my emotion was not happiness, rather; it was relief.
Relief that the nation had put itself back on course. Relief that the toxicity of the Liberal social agenda, the active disparagement of particular classes and groups, that feeling of alienation in your own country, was over. And over in the only way that could be final: with a resounding electoral instruction of "no more". Paul Keating, former Labor PM 1991-1996 in The Age today
AND Natalie won Idol as well!!
AND I got my job!!
Oh AND I had a great time in Mackay with Sean and Ursh... but that's another post.

2:10 pm - Bugger!
|
I have to interview for my job. One other person applied. Grrrrr. And worst past is that it is on Monday morning, right after I've gotten off the plane from visiting Sean and Ursh in Mackay. I get in at 7:45 and will have to rush straight to work - bleck!
Looks like it will go down as one of my crappier interviews at this rate. Also means I can't get blind drunk on Sunday night with Sean and Ursh. I guess that just leaves Thursday, Friday and Saturday (John 'the sniviling turd' Howard's last night as PM) nights for frivolity.

Okay I really hate my calf. It was getting all better over the past few weeks then on Monday it was hurting again.
I *think* I may have strained it again on Sunday night going up the stairs at home (... while drunk watching the football...). Bugger.
So I'm off to the physio again today to display my lack of progress.

6:08 pm - Ooooh the water tastes brown
|
Went kayaking today down the Brisbane river with my roommate and some of her friends. Was very cool. I'm just happy I didn't fall in (unlike two of the guys who were with us). It was actually much easier than I thought, but I was a clear day and no wind so that probably helped. Then we went to the Regatta for lunch and I had a very under-whelming meal.
I'm a bit sported out this weekend... the ALF and NRL finals (go Cowboys), Rugby world cup (yay Wallabies), and the women's soccer world cup (we drew with Norway when I was expecting to get flogged). Lucky I don't have pay tv or I would have been trying to fit in the WNBA finals as well.
Ugh need sleep.

3:18 pm - City walk
|
It was such a beautiful day today that my roommate and I decided to do a big walk around the city. We went from Toowong into the city (saw some Police Pride march so we stopped and watched - we were also afraid of getting done for j walking). Then we went across Victoria Bridge and walked through Southbank, down through Kangaroo Point then up and across the Story Bridge. I've never been across the Story Bridge before so that was cool. A first time for everything. I think I will try and so some sort of *first* every week from now on. Then we just walked back through the Botanic Gardens and back to Toowong. 3 hours non stop so I am kind of stuffed now. But it was cool. Best day to do it - not too hot not too cold.
